Category: Geeks r Us
Hi.
I've been using Mozilla Firefox for a few days now. In that time I have been experiencing this wierd thing when using it.
It sometimes just freezes and won't refresh or anything. I have to restart my Laptop again, then it sort of happens again just five minutes using it.
Any suggestions on how to fix this issue?
Are you using JAWS. I don't know if this is true or not, but I have heard that newer versions of JAWS cause Firefox to gobble up your computer's memory. You could even have a gig or two devoted to Firefox. Then if the program doesn't end when you shut it down - if it's still in your task manager, you have to stop it manually. I had the same problem the other day. it caused my entire computer to come to a grinding halt. I'm not posative whether the two were related though.
i've never seen that problem on any machine i use, it might be someting in firefox itself, have you tried killing it from task manager?
Remove and reinstall it. Make sure you remove it from the programs as well in Windows 7. Also use the latest version if you aren't.
I also heard about the Jaws and Firefox memory issue, and also have the freezing problem. Particularly nasty on my pathetic excuse for a netbook. Not to mention there was one time when, I kid you not, Firefox took up over 3.4 gigs of Ram! Works a bit better with NVDA, but still, I'm not pleased. I'd switch to IE or Chrome or some other web browser.
I think that is wrong. Firefox shouldn't load that much ram. Your netbook only has 1 or 2 GB so interesting. I have one I run it on just fine.
I thought I should explain my reason for suggesting reinstalling Firefox.
It will give you a fresh install, so all issues should be fixed.
Another thing you should do while installing it is select custom instead of standard install. Next tab through every screen in the install process to make sure you are installing it the way you want. Even when you get to the install button tab some more, because it ask if you want Firefox to be your default browser, so if you don’t want this you’ll need to uncheck it.
Tab through gives you options.
Okay next after install you’ll want to go through its settings to make sure things like the pop up blocker are on. A pop up will make Firefox seem to freeze to use, when if you could see you’d simply click it. There are other settings you might want to change so that it runs smoothly. Suggested sites, or spelling as you type are things I don’t like. I also don’t like it to use some plug ins, so disable them as well.
Many things can freeze a screen reader, and if you didn’t install it yourself, each time you upgrade it selects the settings that were already selected, so you see a fresh install can correct many things.
Reinstalling might help, particularly if it's a custom one. I've tried it, personally it didn't make a difference. Incidentally my netbook's got four gigs of ram, it's a pretty big netbook, but it lacks processing power. Anyways, yeah, if reinstalling solves the issue, fantastic. IF not, what happens next is up to you.
I ask this question on the support pages and this was what I learned. Hope it helps. Some had success with a clean install, but for these that didn't here is what was tried.
Oh, and that netbook you got is a geek machine. 4GB on a netbook? Not a netbook anymore. Lol.

It's still a netbook, sorry, because the processor is still a scaled-up mobile processor, not a scaled-down standard processor.
You may well want to give your Google Chrome a try. Works with new versions of JAWS and NVDA at least. But it's quite different, no menu bars and things. In a way it's less different for us than it is for someone sighted who isn't a geek though.
Thank you guys so much. I really appreciated it .
